Pearl — styles you will see at the showroom.

The only gem here that came out of a living animal, and the only one you should judge by rolling it across the counter.

A representative selection. Stock turns over daily, so treat these as the house style rather than a list of what is in the case today.

What to look at

Lustre is everything: a good pearl reflects the lamp as a sharp bright spot with a clean edge, a poor one returns a milky smear. Look at the surface for the same reason — bumps and pits are normal in small numbers, and a strand where they cluster on the visible half was assembled carelessly. South Sea pearls are the large warm ones, Akoya the small bright whites, freshwater everything in between.

Nacre thickness decides how long the pearl survives. Thin coating on a shell bead wears through and shows the core; this is why an evenly matched strand costs many times an uneven one that looks similar at first glance. Pearls dislike perfume, hairspray and ultrasonic cleaners — put them on last and wipe them after wearing.
